The Common Law Admission Test

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national-level entrance examination conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) in India. It serves as the gateway for admissions to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law programs offered by 24 participating NLUs and various affiliated institutions.

Key Details of CLAT 2025:

  • Exam Date: CLAT 2025 is scheduled for December 1, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. 
  • Mode of Examination: The test will be conducted in an offline, pen-and-paper format. 

Eligibility Criteria:

Undergraduate Program (UG):

    • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have completed 10+2 or an equivalent examination with a minimum of 45% marks (40% for SC/ST candidates). 
    • Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for UG programs.

Postgraduate Program (PG):

      • Educational Qualification: Applicants should hold an LL.B. degree or its equivalent with at least 50% marks (45% for SC/ST candidates).
      • Age Limit: No upper age limit is specified for PG programs.

Exam Pattern:

UG CLAT:

      • Duration: 2 hours
      • Total Questions: 120 multiple-choice questions

Sections:

        • English Language
        • Current Affairs, including General Knowledge
        • Legal Reasoning
        • Logical Reasoning
        • Quantitative Techniques
      • Marking Scheme: Each correct answer awards 1 mark; 0.25 marks are deducted for each incorrect answer.

PG CLAT:

    • Duration: 2 hours
    • Total Questions: 120 multiple-choice questions
    • Sections:
      • Constitutional Law
      • Other areas of law such as Jurisprudence, Administrative Law, Law of Contract, Torts, Family Law, Criminal Law, Property Law, Company Law, Public International Law, Tax Law, Environmental Law, and Labour & Industrial Law
    • Marking Scheme: Each correct answer awards 1 mark; 0.25 marks are deducted for each incorrect answer.

Syllabus Overview:

UG CLAT:

      • English Language: Comprehension passages, grammar, and vocabulary.
      • Current Affairs & General Knowledge: Contemporary events, arts and culture, international affairs, and historical events of significance.
      • Legal Reasoning: Fact situations or scenarios involving legal matters, public policy questions, or moral philosophical inquiries.
      • Logical Reasoning: Recognizing arguments, identifying premises and conclusions, and analyzing patterns of reasoning.
      • Quantitative Techniques: Elementary mathematics, including ratios, proportions, basic algebra, mensuration, and statistical estimation. 

PG CLAT:

    • Focuses on major subjects of law studied during the undergraduate program, including Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, and other law subjects as mentioned above.

Application Process:

  • Registration: The application window for CLAT 2025 opened on July 15, 2024, and closed on October 22, 2024.

  • Application Fee:
    • General/OBC/PWD/NRI candidates: ₹4,000
    • SC/ST/BPL candidates: ₹3,500

The cost for previous years’ question papers is ₹500 (not included in the application fee). 

Admit Card:

The admit card for CLAT 2025 is expected to be released on or after November 15, 2024. Candidates can download it from the official website using their login credentials.

  • Regular Reading: Stay updated with current affairs by reading newspapers, journals, and magazines.
