The Chartered Accountancy (CA) Foundation Examination is the entry-level test for aspiring Chartered Accountants in India, administered by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). It assesses a candidate's proficiency in fundamental accounting and business principles.

Eligibility Criteria:

Educational Qualification: Candidates must have completed their 10+2 (Senior Secondary) examination from a recognized board. Provisional registration is permitted after passing the Class 10 examination, but candidates can only appear for the Foundation exam after completing their 10+2.

Registration Process:

Registration Window: ICAI opens registration for the CA Foundation course multiple times a year. For instance, registration for the January 2025 session began on November 10, 2024.

Registration Validity: The registration is valid for three years, allowing up to six attempts. Revalidation is required after this period.

Registration Process:

    • Visit the ICAI Self Service Portal (SSP) at 
    • Complete the online registration form with personal and academic details.
    • Upload necessary documents, including photographs and signatures.
    • Pay the registration fee online.

Examination Structure:

The CA Foundation exam comprises four papers, each carrying 100 marks, totaling 400 marks:

  1. Paper 1: Principles and Practice of Accounting
  2. Paper 2: Business Laws and Business Correspondence and Reporting
  3. Paper 3: Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning, and Statistics
  4. Paper 4: Business Economics and Business and Commercial Knowledge

Exam Pattern:

  • Paper 1 and Paper 2: Subjective type; 3 hours each.
  • Paper 3 and Paper 4: Objective type; 2 hours each.
  • Negative Marking: Applicable for objective papers; 0.25 marks deducted for each incorrect answer.

Passing Criteria:

  • A minimum of 40% marks in each paper.
  • An aggregate of 50% across all four papers.

Examination Schedule:ICAI conducts the CA Foundation exam thrice a year:

  • January Session: Exams typically held in mid-January.
  • May/June Session: Exams conducted in May or June.
  • November/December Session: Exams held in November or December.For the January 2025 session, the exams are scheduled for January 12, 14, and 18, 2025. 

Application Process for Examination:

  • Exam Form Availability: The exam form is released on the ICAI website. For January 2025, it was available from November 10, 2024.
    Deadline: The last date for form submission without a late fee is November 23, 2024. With a late fee, the deadline extends to November 26, 2024.
  • Application Steps:
    • Log in to the ICAI SSP portal.
    • Fill out the examination form with required details.
    • Upload necessary documents.
    • Pay the examination fee online.
